"We all think that the people closest to us are special and they are. But, sometimes there are people that are ‘exceptionally special’ and our Dad is one of those people."

Terry Sysum alias (The Fonz)

The earliest time I remember is Terry coming home with David my older brother I was still at junior school , as all kids they tend to look up to your older brother and their friends, this was no exceptions, I wanted Terry to be my friend too, I know this as the following has happen since:

I joined Linden rd secondary school and on one of the first days I went to the boys toilets and while I was in there a bigger guy came in (Andy Wainwright) he grab me and started to threaten me, but in walks super man ( Terry), he jumped on Andy who was a least a foot taller and 2 stone heavier but Terry left him knowing that if he was ever to try to bully me again he would be on the receiving end of it. Andy became a very good friend after that.

I was 12, Terry and David were 14 we all had girlfriends, David ( Lillian Hayes) Terry (Jane Winter) me (Julie no boobs Salter) Again, I would look up to them as there girlfriends had boobs but mind didn’t, so one day when we was due to meet them, Terry said that he could not make it so I didn’t tell Julie in the hope I might see Jane , but when Jane and Lillian turned up it was my chance to work my plan and see if I could pull Jane, I did but Lillian caught us snogging under the dinning room table and said that she was going to tell Terry.  I was dreading it as I have seen him mad ( in the toilets at school) and I did not want to be on the end if that, so before Lillian could tell him I thought I would be extra nice to him and eventually tell him, this went on for hours me doing ever thing that he asked, I eventually decided to tell him, expecting to get a slap, but that never happen, when I said what had happen he said “ did you enjoy it, was it fun then fill your boots, O and don’t get caught doing anything with Lillian as David is in love her” He remained cool calm and collective, (Fonz)

Many years past of us terrorising the neighbourhood and their pets. Terry and Jenny shooting next doors dog right between the eyes, sticking bangers on the side of the aviary killing tens of buggies, rolling up dog pooh in newspaper and setting it alight on peoples door steps so they would see the paper burning, then stamp on it and all the pooh would fly out.  We decided to go over the Oxlades with our air guns to shoot rabbits, we couldn’t find any so Terry says you stand up that end I will stand this end and we can shoot at each other, me not understanding that his .22 air rifle is a lot more powerful than my 177 air rifle and if I hit him and it would only sting him, but when he shoot me, he not only hit me but it was bleeding, so out pops super man again (Terry)and patches me up, what a hero, well he was mine any way.

Terry runs off to join the army, leaving me behind, I was gutted and started to go off the rails, but it didn’t last long as a year later I joined him in the Glosters serving in Germany.  What a great time we had there, wine, woman and booze, all at a price. What about Terry in Belize sitting at the entrance to the brothel getting drunk on ASBACH & COKE  loaning all the guys money to pay for the girls, but demanding 50% interest on his return, pure genius at work. That money paid for a lot of fun for us. He even managed to talk me into getting paid fortnightly and he was paid monthly, that way we would always have money for booze.  Were there any limits to his talents?

Terry then introduced me to the gang, Glyn Davies, Nigel Moore, Gary Slatter and Steve Perrins, what a nightmare I seem to be in a total haze until Terry had his demob two years later, that wasn’t as bad as I still had the gang.

Terry I believe you have contributed a great deal to my life and in some aspect you are the reason I have been able to succeed in many of the things I have tried.  Thank you for that, I will always owe you a sum of gratitude for doing so. I know we have drifted apart over recent years but you have always been in my thoughts and many conversations and I am sure you will be for many years to come.  I am the one that is blessed to have such a great friend as you to guide, help and assist me in the early years

After all those years since your friendship has never been matched, thank you for the privilege.
